The Taskmaster was a 2010 Edinburgh Festival Fringe show presented by Alex Horne. Across 2009, Horne set 20 comedians monthly tasks. In the two-hour show, he discussed each contestant's attempts at each task, with a screen behind him showing photographs of attempts. The show was followed up with Taskmaster II in 2011.
Contestants include: Dan Atkinson, Tom Basden, Jarred Christmas, James Dowdeswell, Rick Edwards, Tim Fitzhigham, Stuart Goldsmith, Steve Hall, Tim Key, Lloyd Langford, Josie Long, Guy Morgan, Al Pitcher, Mark Olver, Mark Watson, Henning Wehn, Joe Wilkinson, Lloyd Woolf, Mike Wozniak, and Tom Wrigglesworth.
The winner was Mike Wozniak. Four contestants would go on to appear in the UK TV version (Joe Wilkinson, Mark Watson, Mike Wozniak and Tim Key), one on the Australian version (Lloyd Langford) and one on the Swedish version, as a guest (Al Pitcher). Mark Olver is a frequent warm-up comedian for Taskmaster live shows. Josie Long won Taskmaster II the following year.
Tasks[]
- 1) Put money in Alex's bank account
- Mark Watson puts in almost £200; no-one else pays more than £1.
- 2) Find a hedgehog
- Tim Key emails Alex within 8 minutes, simply saying "Found one."
- 5) Send Alex a large Christmas present in the post
- Steve Hall sends 10 copies of a book by Eddie Large.
- Dan Atkinson sends a load of bubble wrap.
- Mike Wozniak sends in a wooden plinth attached to a 40m tall ice sculpture.
- Someone gave Alex a subscription to "Big and bouncy porn".
- Unknown) Down a pint of milk as fast as possible.
- Lloyd Langford accidentally deleted this email and asked Dan Atkinson what the task was, who told him to smash a pint glass over his head. He also asked Steve Hall to confirm that this was the task, after which he agreed to smash a pint glass over his head.
- Unknown) Find the best thing for Alex to do in Melbourne.
- Mark Watson, who was also in Melbourne, spent the day going up and down in a lift with Alex discussing their friendship.
- Unknown) Make a statue of Alex Horne
- Mike Wozniak filmed his, with audio from a movie or something
- 9) Guess what fruit Alex is holding in a picture.
- Tom Basden guesses an egg.
- Alex was holding a lemon.
- 10) Send Alex a picture of an egg
- Tom Basden sends a picture of a lemon.
- Tie break: Wozniak and Fizhigham were tied for first. The challenge was to down a pint and then nod you head as many times in a minute. Wozniak won.
- Fitzhigham doesn't drink beer, so he instead opted to drink a pint of red wine. He then only nodded for 20 seconds and his nod count was multiplied by three.
